It Was Only a Matter of Time

September 25, 2008

Children’s Hospital recently built a new facility 5 minutes from our house.  It has lots of out-patient treatment services and a full emergency department.  We knew when they were building it that it would only be a matter of time before we would be there — yesterday was the day. :(  Here’s the scoop…

A little over a week ago Nick fell off his scooter and hurt his arm.  It really didn’t seem so bad and he was only complaining off & on so we didn’t do anything about it (we’re awesome parents, I know).  Anyhoo, a week later he’s still complaining so we decide to take him to a Children’s Urgent Care (not at the new place by our house — that’s an emergency room, not an urgent care).  So we go & they take a couple x-rays and don’t find anything.  They say it’s a sprain and if it’s not better in a few days to follow-up with our doctor.

A couple of days pass and no improvement.  I bumped his elbow (on accident) and he cries in pain.  Hmmmm…the x-rays only focused on the wrist.  Now the elbow hurts too?  We decide to call his doctor.  We go in and he decides we need to do more x-rays of more of the arm.  So, this is when we head to the new Children’s.  We get checked in rather quickly and taken back for the x-rays rather quickly.  The doctor had said we could leave after the x-rays and he’d call us with the results.  The x-ray lady suggested we wait there for the results rather than waiting on the doctor just in case he needed to be seen for a fracture.  That sounded reasonable so we waited.  And we waited.  And we waited.  And then we waited some more…..after an HOUR we’re told that they’ve phoned our doctor and we should call him!  Hello!  That’s what he wanted us to do in the first place!!

So, we left the hospital and called the doctor’s office.  No fractures.  He needs to take Motrin & rest it and if it’s not better in a week we need to go back.  What I’ve failed to mention up to this point is that the doctor mentioned that it might be a fracture or a sprain or it could be this other rare condition that sometimes happens with nerves when an injury like this occurs.  I’m not going to tell you what it is because I “googled” it and it’s not good :(  However, I don’t think that’s it.  I prayed really hard about it last night and he seems to be doing better.  If you believe in the power of prayer would you join me in praying for healing of whatever is going on with Nick’s arm?  I know that whatever it is — fracture, sprain, or this nerve thing — that God is bigger than the injury and He can take care of it!
