Vacation – Day 2

July 30, 2011

Monday morning we got up and headed down to breakfast.  It was a little crowded and your typical hotel breakfast but it was FREE.  After breakfast we were planning to start our day with a double-decker bus tour.  It was hot so we had agreed that we’d just do half the tour today (it was a hop-on, hop-off ticket good for three days).  We were going to start at a stop close to our hotel and end at the stop at Willis (Sears) Tower.  We walked a few blocks to our stop (the first of a lot of walking on the trip) and was greeted by a GIANT Marilyn Monroe statue.  I traded in our bus vouchers (purchased online) for tickets and off we went.

This tour was GREAT!  We got to see so much of the city that we never would have seen.  We heard great stories of history of Chicago and also fun stuff like different buildings & places used in a variety of movies – from My Best Friend’s wedding to Batman to Transformers.  I had no idea.  We also saw the building where Oprah has a condo.  Of course we decided later that our tour guide could have been making all this stuff up and we never would have known.

As we were zipping around town on the double-decker bus we were pleasantly surprised that there was a very nice breeze blowing so we decided to go ahead and do the entire tour.  I was so glad we did.  It was such fun and we also discovered that our hotel was very close to several of the bus stops.  This info would come in handy as we planned our travel for the next couple of days.

At the end of the tour we got off the bus and walked around a mall/shopping center.  Tay found her favorite store and bought a shirt and necklace.  I bought a cupcake necklace.  Cute!  We also stopped at the Hershey store but it was so hot outside we didn’t buy anything.  (The samples they gave us were a little melted by the time I took them out of my bag later that night.)

It was past lunchtime and everyone was getting hungry.  Nick wanted to go to the Hard Rock Cafe’ that we had passed on the tour.  We were figuring out the best way to get there.  We could have hopped on the next bus to come by and taken it to that stop but we decided we’d walk.  We had a great lunch (I had the BEST salad).  We laughed (or at least I did) when I asked the waitress where the restroom was and she said, “under Mick Jagger’s pants”.  LOL!

After lunch we hopped back on the bus and headed to the skydeck at Willis (Sears) Tower.  103 floors up and an amazing view of  Chicago.  The kids stepped out onto the glass ledge and loved it (said it wasn’t scary).  I took a tiny step onto the ledge just to say I did it.  Brian hates heights so he wasn’t thrilled with any of this!

We hopped another bus and headed towards a stop close to our hotel.  We stopped for slushies on the walk back.

Tay wasn’t feeling well so she took a nap while Brian and Nick went swimming and ran out to get us something to eat (Jimmy John’s subs.  I hadn’t had them before.  I had the tuna.  Yum!).  I think the heat may have done her in as she was fine the next day.  After a late dinner we just hung out in the room and watched a ton of Cash Cab.  It was one of the few things on and quickly became a favorite.  When a Chicago episode came on Nick started asking to take a cab in the hopes of getting on the show.

What a fun day!   More to come…
