Have You Read Your Bible Today?

August 19, 2015

This morning Taylor posted this on facebook (posted here with her permission)…

Psalm 119:105 is one of the most “known by heart” verses out there. We learn it from the time we can even remotely understand it, till we are 85 and can barely get to church. It says, “Your word is a lamp for my feet, and a light on my path.” But how often do we actually treat God’s word with that respect? Mark 4:21 says, “Do you bring in a lamp to put it under a bowl or a bed? Instead, don’t you put it on its stand?” I feel that too often, we are so quick to pick up our Bible, read a chapter or two, and then put it back on the shelf to gather (even more) dust. Do we ever take time to share with others what we are learning or what God is saying to us, through his word? Do we ever really take the time to base important decisions on what His word says? Cause after all, it is a light for our paths! So, let’s all try to be a little bolder about the word, and about our God in general! His word is incredible, and doesn’t deserve to be put back on that shelf!

The girl inspires me.

When she was younger she didn’t really enjoy reading.  The past couple of years she has turned into a bookworm.  She loves reading Christian non-fiction (I’ll have to share some of her favorite books sometime) but what she LOVES reading more than anything else is her Bible.  She reads and highlights and journals every day.  Every. Single. Day.  Sometimes for an hour or more.

There have been several times lately where I’ve been in a class or conference where the topic of reading the Bible has come up and I know I need to be better opening my own Bible each day.  I’m such a slacker compared to Tay!

If you’re like me and need a little boost in this area, you might want to check out a great new app from Proverbs 31 Ministry called “First 5”.  One of the girls in my Bible study likes the “Girlfriends in God” daily email devotions from crosswalk.com.  Sheila Walsh has a new devotion book out called “5 Minutes with Jesus” that looks good too.  So many great options for starting out the day the right way!
